U.I Card Overlay & Character Illustration - ASCEND

Ascend is a 4 month student game done with a team of 5. It's a card game where you confront enemies to rise to the top of a tower in order make your ascension. You can summon powerful creatures and use different elements to either boost your board or control the enemy's one.

I was in charge of the concept of the board (which you can see on my other post), the design of the cards borders, and some of the cards illustrations like Bao, the Playfull Aracanist which you can see in this post.

Bao is one of the three hero of our game. He is a smiling kid wholike to play tricks on the the adults arounf him with a mysterious magic cube than can take the form of anything that he found. He comes from a vietnamese inspired village and is proud to represent his owns to the Ascension ceremony.

The research for the border cards where really interesting as it was a work where I needed to combine clarity and identity. I tried to use a variety of references taken from our moodboards.

It was a true pleasure to work with this team, you can find their work here :

You can use the raw basics elements directly or use the Catalyser on the side of the board to combine them into powerful complex elements.

Here you can see the final design for the creature card border on the left and an exemple of a card in game on the right (the final border was made by Yann Esparbié using Substance Designer). You can also see my illustration of Bao.

For our game we needed to differentiate the elements from the creatures but still maintaining a unity across all the cards.

My first research on Bao, I tried to capture as soon as possible his character. He is still a kid, he likes to make fun of people and he is kind of arrogant, especially for his young age.
